Governments of the Industrial World, you weary giants of flesh and steel, I come from Cyberspace, the new home of Mind. On behalf of the future, I ask you of the past to leave us alone. You are not welcome among us. You have no sovereignty where we gather.

We have no elected government, nor are we likely to have one, so I address you with no greater authority than that with which liberty itself always speaks. I declare the global social space we are building to be naturally independent of the tyrannies you seek to impose on us. You have no moral right to rule us nor do you possess any methods of enforcement we have true reason to fear.

Governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed. You have neither solicited nor received ours. We did not invite you. You do not know us, nor do you know our world. Cyberspace does not lie within your borders. Do not think that you can build it, as though it were a public construction project. You cannot. It is an act of nature and it grows itself through our collective actions.

You have not engaged in our great and gathering conversation, nor did you create the wealth of our marketplaces. You do not know our culture, our ethics, or the unwritten codes that already provide our society more order than could be obtained by any of your impositions.

You claim there are problems among us that you need to solve. You use this claim as an excuse to invade our precincts. Many of these problems don’t exist. Where there are real conflicts, where there are wrongs, we will identify them and address them by our means. We are forming our own Social Contract . This governance will arise according to the conditions of our world, not yours. Our world is different.

Cyberspace consists of transactions, relationships, and thought itself, arrayed like a standing wave in the web of our communications. Ours is a world that is both everywhere and nowhere, but it is not where bodies live.

We are creating a world that all may enter without privilege or prejudice accorded by race, economic power, military force, or station of birth.

We are creating a world where anyone, anywhere may express his or her beliefs, no matter how singular, without fear of being coerced into silence or conformity.

Your legal concepts of property, expression, identity, movement, and context do not apply to us. They are all based on matter, and there is no matter here.

Our identities have no bodies, so, unlike you, we cannot obtain order by physical coercion. We believe that from ethics, enlightened self-interest, and the commonweal, our governance will emerge . Our identities may be distributed across many of your jurisdictions. The only law that all our constituent cultures would generally recognize is the Golden Rule. We hope we will be able to build our particular solutions on that basis. But we cannot accept the solutions you are attempting to impose.

In the United States, you have today created a law, the Telecommunications Reform Act, which repudiates your own Constitution and insults the dreams of Jefferson, Washington, Mill, Madison, DeToqueville, and Brandeis. These dreams must now be born anew in us.

You are terrified of your own children, since they are natives in a world where you will always be immigrants. Because you fear them, you entrust your bureaucracies with the parental responsibilities you are too cowardly to confront yourselves. In our world, all the sentiments and expressions of humanity, from the debasing to the angelic, are parts of a seamless whole, the global conversation of bits. We cannot separate the air that chokes from the air upon which wings beat.

In China, Germany, France, Russia, Singapore, Italy and the United States, you are trying to ward off the virus of liberty by erecting guard posts at the frontiers of Cyberspace. These may keep out the contagion for a small time, but they will not work in a world that will soon be blanketed in bit-bearing media.

Your increasingly obsolete information industries would perpetuate themselves by proposing laws, in America and elsewhere, that claim to own speech itself throughout the world. These laws would declare ideas to be another industrial product, no more noble than pig iron. In our world, whatever the human mind may create can be reproduced and distributed infinitely at no cost. The global conveyance of thought no longer requires your factories to accomplish.

These increasingly hostile and colonial measures place us in the same position as those previous lovers of freedom and self-determination who had to reject the authorities of distant, uninformed powers. We must declare our virtual selves immune to your sovereignty, even as we continue to consent to your rule over our bodies. We will spread ourselves across the Planet so that no one can arrest our thoughts.

We will create a civilization of the Mind in Cyberspace. May it be more humane and fair than the world your governments have made before.

The Guardian of Sleep Must Die

“Modern Society must reawaken, the guardian of sleep must die.”

I’ve started a new work called “The Guardian of Sleep” based on some of Guy Debord’s work, in principle, The Society of the Spectacle. In reworking this text I’ve attempted to summarize condense, aphorize and weaponize his rhetoric. I’ll be tweeting portions of this text from the account “guardianofsleep” in an attempt to plant a meme structure, a mental virus, within the information architecture of modern society. The current fundamental worldview, the common ground of society, and the existing system’s conditions, goals, and origins of power must be revealed, then dismantled, disembodied, dissolve and finally reformed with an intentional crafting toward a world that works for all people.

The power of this social reality must be mitigated in order to liberate the individual and reestablish a sense of community.

The accumulation of communication must be decentralized so that the social relation among people is not mediated strictly through a technology who’s central purpose is the consumption of this communication.

The alienation which supports society must be identified and reformed so that the collection of separate individual egos can dissolve and reform into a true unity.

The unity of life must be reestablished and reality must be considered in full, rather than as an object for contemplation. That which appears should be questioned, and is not good by necessity of appearance.

The immense accumulation of spectacles is not life. Mere appearance is the negation of life and must be inverted into the real. The totalitarian management of the conditions of existence must be abolished.

We must move away from representation, and favor direct experience while separating every aspect of life from the constant stream of detached images. These simple images must remain distant from the real world so that it can be grasped directly.

These specialized images of the world must be inverted and abandoned.

The autonomous movement of the nonliving must be given life.

Modern conditions of production, and the self consuming discourse of society must be interrupted and must not pervade every aspect of life. The present model of society must be known as unreal and unjustified. Class reform is necessary to deinstitutionalize the social division of labor.

Weaknesses, contradictions and incoherence within the spreading technical rationality must be identified in order to prevent the form of modern society from choosing its own content and developing power for the sake of power. Rather, society must be intentionally crafted to become cognizant of the underlying truths within the world.

The illusion must be revealed and humans must regain their power to unify truth.

Modern society must reawaken, the guardian of sleep must die.

New dialogues, signs and symbols which directly subvert and challenge the ruling production must be created. To do this one must use the tools and structure of the very society which must be inverted.

One must aim toward something other than oneself and seek to produce the real, not the image of the real. This in turn will liberate the production of the real.

Appearing must reform into having, and then into being as its ultimate function.

My DJ MediaFire project got a thoughtful mention in this article in Frieze Magazine Berlin -

to respond - I wanted there to be a bit of criticism as well as support for the relationship between technology, and this kind of ‘natural spiritualism’ in the work. I’m hopeful enough to maintain optimism but also critical and cynical of any utopian promise. Manual For The Earth Awakening is an enveloping atmosphere, but like Joe Hamiltons work mentioned in the article, its really a disjointed patchwork of narratives thats been smoothed over and seemingly connected into a kind of ‘hyper geography’ of esoteric techno-narratives. Where the sublime meets the hyper-real, and where naive optimism meets biotech opportunism.

I created the work with the intention of allowing for several conflicting narratives to be present, from blindly optimistic self-actualizing metaphysical gurus, to military-industrial pundits reflecting on morality in machine based systems and warfare, and transhuman advocates thirsty for genetically modifying themselves at any cost in hopes of extending their lifespan.

Technology can and should be used by humans to reveal something beautiful and push us forward into a better place, but without a sense of awareness one can be caught in the novelty of the tools themselves and become trapped. To quote Heidegger “technology’s ultimate essence resides in a poetic dwelling near the truth of Being”and humans should use technology to become “cognizant of concealed truths”rather than allow technology to alienate us and become determinant of its own truth.

Dominikus mentions Bohme and the dichotomy between signs/symbols and atmospheres, which to me reads as the Apollonian and Dionysian. The rigid world of logic order and reason conflicting with the sensual, experiential and primal. Its important not to embrace either but to find the fragile balance between the two.

The challenge we’re faced with in this hyper globalized and interconnected world is to maintain enough critical distance to not accept things as they are and to craft material & form with intentionality toward the truth, but at the same time not loose the closeness of experience required to have the kind of subject-object dissolvement and experiential emergence that leads us into moments of epiphany, ecstasy and transcendence. And to never be consumed by technology as a tool and let it develop for its own sake without guidance or awareness of its effects in the world.

DARPA’s Chip-Scale Combinatorial Atomic Navigator (C-SCAN) effort seeks an atomic inertial sensor to measure orientation in GPS-denied environments.

DARPA is soliciting innovative research proposals in the area of co-integration of inertial sensors with dissimilar physics of operation in a single micro-scale Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). In this context, the program seeks to address challenges associated with the long-term drift, dynamic range, and start-up time of chip-scale components for positioning, targeting, navigation, and guidance tasks. Specific interest is in the development of a Chip-Scale Combinatorial Atomic Navigator (C-SCAN) that combines inertial sensors with dissimilar, but complementary, physics of operation into a single microsystem. The main objectives of the C-SCAN program are to (1) explore the miniaturization and co-fabrication of atomic sensors with high-performance solidstate inertial sensors, and (2) develop combinatorial algorithms and architectures that seamlessly co-integrate components with dissimilar physics in a single ensemble. The deliverable of this program is a miniature IMU that co-integrates atomic and solid-state inertial sensors in a single microsystem with a volume of no more than 20 cubic centimeters (20 cc) and power consumption of no more than 1 Watt (1 W). The performance of C-SCAN is expected to be above and beyond what is currently available, combining a high resolution of motion detection (10-4 deg/hour for rotation and 10-6 g for linear acceleration), exceptional long-term bias and scale-factor stability (1 ppm with respect to the full-scale of operation), and start-up time performance orders of magnitude better than available today (less than 10 seconds from a cold start).

Noticed this quote that Kevin Slavin tumbled via food on the fire escape last night:

Slavin, rightly so, isolated the highlighted the obviously humorous statement made by Obama. My immediate response was to not only see its humor but also how it felt so intentionally wrought to achieve meme status. I can see it adorning any number of photos of the president on Quick Meme.

So while this specific statement may not have been consciously written, is virality something that is taken into consideration when writing public speeches? Or should it be? This extends beyond mere sloganeering but an adaptation of the same method to how the Internet works to spread messages today. It’s like a reverse-gaffe, as my roommate called it. It’s an intentional humor to your own political points as a means of getting people to latch onto them and spread them. Are speeches written with this in mind? Should they be?

Maybe campaigns will start sourcing their posters from Quick Meme.

This is an astute observation, its definitely built to be memetic. Obama knows how to work that angle and his whole initial campaign was designed in a very internet-aware way at a level that no other politician is doing, other that maybe Ron Paul? Although clearly not as successfully.
